Just a few days ago, Konami delighted fans of classic RPGs with a dedicated live stream focusing entirely on the Suikoden series. After more than a decade without a new installment—since a Japanese and PSP-exclusive side story—anticipation for this event was high. Fans experienced a rollercoaster of emotions upon learning about the upcoming Suikoden anime (exciting!) and a new Suikoden mobile game (well, okay!), which will feature gacha mechanics (not so great!).
Let’s first discuss the anime, titled Suikoden: The Anime. This adaptation will be based on the storyline of Suikoden 2 and marks Konami’s inaugural venture into animation. While we didn’t receive extensive details regarding its visual style or accessibility outside Japan, a brief scenic clip was shared, hinting at what’s to come.
Despite the limited information, this news is thrilling for long-time Suikoden fans and could serve as a great introduction for newcomers if the anime becomes widely accessible.
The second major reveal has left fans feeling a bit torn. The newly announced game, Suikoden Star Leap, boasts stunning visuals reminiscent of the Octopath Traveler style, featuring 2D sprites set against 3D backgrounds. The game is set a few years before Suikoden 1 and a few years after Suikoden 5, and will include the iconic 108 characters seen in previous titles.
However, the game will only be available on mobile platforms for now. While this may not deter dedicated fans entirely, the revelation that Star Leap will incorporate gacha mechanics and ongoing monetization has raised concerns. Many fans are disappointed, as the Suikoden series has traditionally been associated with premium console and PC games. It remains to be seen whether these monetization strategies will hinder players’ enjoyment or their ability to collect all 108 characters.
In the meantime, Suikoden enthusiasts can look forward to the re-releases of Suikoden 1 and 2 through Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. A new trailer for this collection was also showcased during the live stream, and it is set to be released tomorrow, March 7.
